Seldinger technique

Placement of a CVC using the Seldinger method

The Seldinger technique is a well-established procedure in clinical practice used to introduce catheters, probes, electrodes, etc. into vessels.

With the Seldinger method, the puncture always proceeds according to the following principle:

  • Puncture of the vessel with a needle (Seldinger needle, Braunula, valve needle).
  • Insertion of the Seldinger wire through the needle tube or plastic catheter tube (Braunula) into the vessel.
  • Removal of the needle or the plastic catheter tube.
  • The Seldinger wire now serves as means of access to the vein.
  • A CVC may now be inserted via the Seldinger wire and advanced to the desired position.
