| Placement of the catheter |
Catheter placement using the Braunula technique
The procedure: |
1
The puncture site is broadly disinfected; care should be taken that
enough time is allowed for the disinfectant to take effect. |
2
The puncture is performed with a syringe attached so that successful
venous access can be verified through aspiration of blood. |
3
After the steel needle has been removed, the catheter is connected
with the plastic catheter tube located in the vein. The yellow connector
is inserted in the hub of the plastic catheter tube. |
4
The catheter is now introduced into the vein. To do this the catheter
is grasped as it lies in the protective sheath and pushed forward. The protective
sheath can be pushed to the back as necessary. |
5
Following successful placement of the catheter, the protective sheath
can be removed at the proximal end of the catheter. The red element separates
easily from the yellow catheter connector. |
6
Now the two-piece catheter connector is removed. The two pieces are
pulled out of the hub of the plastic catheter tube. Using opposing pressure
the two halves are separated on the grip plate and then the halves are removed
from the catheter. |
7
The plastic catheter tube is withdrawn from the vein and connected
with the catheter hub. |
8
The catheter should now be secured. In the basilic vein, a tape fixation
is sufficient. Transparent film tape facilitates daily inspection of the
puncture site. |
9
Finally the stylet is pulled out of the catheter so that the infusion
may begin. |
